How to Improve Print Quality on PP Woven Bag Printing Machines

Two Practical Ways to Enhance Color Brightness and Register Stability

Introduction

For PP woven bag manufacturers using roll-to-roll printing machines without changing print cylinders, achieving consistent print quality can be challenging. Two common concerns are color brightness and register stability. Based on field experience, this article outlines two practical methods to enhance print quality—both are simple adjustments that can be made without major investment or complex technical changes.

1. Improving Color Brightness

When printing with water-based ink, colors sometimes appear dull or lackluster. This is a common concern, especially when the printed result does not match the expected vibrancy of the design.

Water-based ink has a unique characteristic: the faster the production speed, the brighter and more vivid the color becomes. At lower speeds, the ink does not reach its optimal brightness. As speed increases, the color becomes noticeably more vibrant. This is an inherent property of how water-based ink behaves—not a defect in the machine or the ink.

If you find that printed colors appear dull, try increasing the production speed. Monitor the color change as speed increases—you will typically notice improved brightness and saturation. The adjustment can be made incrementally until the desired color quality is achieved. By finding the right speed, you can achieve brighter colors without changing ink formulation or plate cylinders.

2. Improving Register Stability

Register stability refers to the accuracy of color-to-color alignment. When the register is unstable, the printed colors may shift out of position. Deviations can occur in two directions—transverse (horizontal) and longitudinal (vertical)—each with a specific solution.

For Transverse (Horizontal) Deviation

If the print position shifts horizontally, try switching the unwinder's correction system from automatic to manual mode. In some production conditions, the automatic correction system may not respond optimally. Manual mode gives the operator direct control over web positioning, which can stabilize the transverse register. This is a simple adjustment worth trying when horizontal deviation occurs.

For Longitudinal (Vertical) Deviation

Longitudinal register is directly affected by web tension. If the fabric is not properly tensioned, the print position will vary. Check whether the fabric tension is suitable—the fabric must be tensioned between the front and rear traction rollers, tight enough to prevent sagging, but not so tight that it causes problems.

Different fabric rolls have different weave tightness. Some are woven more loosely, others more tightly. Because of this, the "tension coefficient" parameter must be adjusted based on the specific characteristics of each fabric roll. There is no single setting that works for all rolls—the coefficient should be set according to the actual condition of the fabric being processed. Taking a moment to set tension properly for each roll can prevent misregistration and ensure consistent print quality throughout the production run.

Summary Checklist
Quality Concern Action
Dull colors Increase production speed
Transverse register deviation Switch unwinder correction to manual mode
Longitudinal register deviation Check tension between traction rollers; adjust tension coefficient based on fabric roll
